Regarding affordable protein sources, eggs are the number one choice. According to the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5), over 74% of Indians consume eggs regularly. The per capita egg consumption in India has increased from 30 eggs per year in 2000 to around 81 eggs in 2023, as per the National Egg Coordination Committee (NECC). However, this is still below the World Health Organization (WHO) recommendation of 180 eggs per year per person.
