Why NECC Controls Egg Prices
In the 1980s, poultry farmers in India were facing a very hard time. Egg prices had become so low that farmers couldn’t even cover their basic costs. Many people stopped their work because they were getting losses.
Then, Dr. Banda Vasudev Rao and Chitturi Jagapati Rao travelled around India with some farmers. They met more than 300 people to bring everyone together. Finally, in May 1982, NECC (National Egg Coordination Committee) was started. From 14th May, NECC began telling daily egg prices.
NECC’s Success
Because of NECC’s efforts, egg production increased a lot in India. In 1984-85, production was 8.2 lakh tonnes, and by 1995-96, it reached 14.96 lakh tonnes. Egg exports also increased, which was almost nothing before.
NECC’s Slogan
NECC’s famous slogan is: “Sunday ho ya Monday, roz khao ande!” (Sunday or Monday, eat eggs every day!) We saw this slogan many times in TV ads during our childhood. This slogan helped people understand the importance of eggs and increased their demand.
Difference between NECC, Wholesale, Retail and Supermarket egg rate
The daily and monthly prices published by NECC are for the wholesale market which means they are for farmers suppliers and distributors. Many people confuse wholesale rates with retail and supermarket rates and the rates published by NECC.
What is Wholesale/ Mandi Egg rate?
The wholesale egg rate is the price you pay when buying eggs in bulk. These rates are lower than retail prices because eggs are bought in large quantities and buyers get a discount. The rates published by NECC are for the wholesale market.
What is Retail Egg rate?
The retail egg rate is the price you pay when you buy eggs from local grocery stores. These prices are higher than wholesale rates because retail stores have to cover costs like rent and staff salaries. Retailers buy eggs from wholesalers and sell them to consumers.
What is Supermarket Egg rate?
Supermarket egg rates are the prices you pay when you buy eggs from supermarkets like Big Bazaar, Reliance Fresh, DMart, or Metro. The supermarket prices are slightly higher than local shop prices because they include packaging and branding costs.
Importance of egg rates in india
India is the third biggest egg producer in the world, after China and the USA. In the year 2023–24, India produced around 142.77 billion eggs. Most of the Indians follows a vegetarian diet, so it is very difficult to find good sources of protein especially ones that also give vitamins like B12, D, and minerals like iron and zinc. In this situation, eggs are a very good and rich source of protein.
The major egg-producing states in India are Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, West Bengal, and Karnataka.
Some Hindus, Jains, and Buddhists do not eat eggs because they consider them non-vegetarian. But some Indian vegetarians do eat eggs.
The Indian government and nutrition bodies are encouraging people in rural and poor areas to eat more eggs to fight malnutrition and protein deficiency, because eggs are an affordable and protein rich food.
Eggs are also important for the economy, especially for low-income households. That’s why seasonal changes, bird flu outbreaks, and rising food costs can affect egg production and egg prices a lot.In 2023, India exported around 63 million kg of shell eggs, worth about ₹96.4 million. Also, 26 million kg of egg powder was exported in 2023–24, mostly to Gulf countries, Indonesia, and Japan. The total revenue from these exports in 2023–24 was around ₹91.55 million.
